Measuring properly
Use a digital thermometer. Oral readings are reliable for adults if you have not eaten or drunk anything hot or cold for 15 minutes. Armpit readings run slightly lower. Ear and forehead thermometers are convenient but more affected by technique. For babies, follow your clinician's advice on the best method.
Looking after a fever at home
Rest, drink plenty of fluids and wear light clothing. Fever-reducing medicines such as paracetamol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen can make you more comfortable — follow the label and ask a pharmacist if you take other medicines or have health conditions.
Seek urgent care for a fever with a stiff neck, severe headache, confusion, a rash that does not fade when pressed, trouble breathing, chest pain, seizures, or if you have a weakened immune system. Read more in our guide to fever in adults.
